The Democratic Alliance will be writing to the mayor of the Sol Plaatje Local Municipality, Mangaliso Matika, to request that he calls the chairperson of the Economic Development, Urban Renewal & Tourism committee to order and compels him to abide by council resolutions, specifically as it relates to the membership of the committee.
We will not allow the ANC to dictate to the DA on who will represent the party in which committees. That is a decision for us as the DA to take, not for the ANC. Our decision is that councillor Sharon Steyn and myself will represent the DA in the Economic Development, Urban Renewal & Tourism committee. This decision was supported by the council resolution taken during an ordinary council meeting of October 2017 and again confirmed in December 2017. The ANC had an opportunity to object during the council meeting, but failed to do so.
Councillor Mpho Moshweu as chairperson of the Economic Development, Urban Renewal & Tourism committee must obey council’s resolution and stop trying to prevent councillor Steyn from participating in the committee. As a councillor, the chairperson has no authority to override the resolution of council and his arrogant attempts to do so will not be tolerated. The representation of the DA is an internal matter to be decided by the DA.
To say that there is a conflict of interest for councillor Steyn to serve on the committee is entirely baseless. Firstly, the committee serves as an advisory body to council and does not have any authority to disburse funds directly. Indeed, as an employee of the Northern Cape Chamber of Commerce and Industry, councillor Steyn has valuable knowledge and insight into the local business community which can be immensely beneficial to the committee when making recommendations on the disbursements of funds. Secondly, should a matter arise in which councillor Steyn has a direct interest, she can and will recuse herself from the committee. This is a standard practice followed in councils by all councillors with integrity.
We will insist that councillor Moshweu upholds the resolution of council and we will not let the ANC pick and choose which councillors represents the DA in which committees.
