The Democratic Alliance urges the Northern Cape Department of Education to work with the Sol Plaatje Local Municipality to find a long-term solution to the ongoing sewerage problems at Pescodia High School in Roodepan in Kimberley.
Schooling was again disrupted today due to blocked sewerage pipes. The department reportedly allowed for construction to happen at the school without first submitting proper building plans to the municipality for approval. In the construction process, sewerage lines were blocked.
As a result, the school has a major sanitation crisis on its hands. The overflow of sewerage poses a severe health risk to the learners, educators and community as a whole.
The municipality can assist in the short term by unblocking the sewerage pipes, but a long-term solution is needed to rectify the situation. The health and safety of our learners must be one of our first concerns in ensuring that all learners have access to quality education.
The people of Northern Cape deserve a Total Change, with a caring government that will prioritise their needs.
