The Democratic Alliance has written to the Speaker and Mayor of the Sol Plaatje Local Municipality for clarity on the newly formed stakeholders committee.
While the committee was launched as Operation Simunye by the Municipality through local media, councillors have not been informed about the project and neither the budget, nor the IDP of the municipality provides for it.
At the Safety & Security Committee meeting held last week, I was notified that a stakeholders committee was established to assist with security issues. When I asked for more information, the chairman, Cllr. Meleng, indicated that the Intergovernmental Committee is driving this issue. My colleague on the Intergovernmental Committee, councillor Wesley van Rooyen, says that the Intergovernmental Committee has not even met this year.
We welcome initiatives that can enhance the safety of residents and improve service delivery. Yet there is no transparency around the newly formed stakeholders committee. Who will the stakeholders be and what which roles will they be fulfilling? Who is going to chair this stakeholders committee? What are the financial implications?
For councillors to communicate effectively with our wards, we need to know what is happening within our municipality. And the Sol Plaatje Local Municipality needs to know the aim of all projects, and how to go about achieving it.
