Sol Plaatje must turn streetlights on for festive season

Filename not specified.Date: 12 September 2019Release: Immediate The Democratic Alliance (DA) is alarmed by the growing spate of sexual offences and violent crime in the Northern Cape. This, in the midst of a nationwide outcry against gender-based violence. The crime statistics presented today show that all forms of sexual offences in the province, including rape, which had slowly begun to show a downward trend over the past few years, are exactly back to where they were five years ago. This is very worrying, especially for a province that has one of the highest ratios of sexual crimes to population in the whole country.Clearly SAPS is losing the battle. No wonder our communities have lost faith in the police protecting them.Another major concern is the seemingly never-ending rise in Property Related Crimes, with a massive increase of over 800 cases for this financial year. The increase in residential burglaries is particularly unsettling. Residents feel unsafe in their own homes. At the same time, they are terrified of leaving their homes unattended. It is a no-win situation. On top of this, all other categories of violent crimes in the province have also skyrocketed, including attempted murder, common assault and robbery with aggravating circumstances.Lawlessness and disorder have become the order of the day. The only conclusion one can draw is that the criminal justice system does not work under the chaotic ANC government. One also cannot isolate the growing levels of crime from increasing unemployment in the province and the country. The ANC government has long forgotten about our people and it is too entwined in factional battles and in enriching themselves, while women and children pay for this with their lives. We simply cannot accept the high levels of crime that are breaking down society any longer. That is why we say criminals must pay and at the same time, any police found guilty of corruption must pay too, with a sentence of 15-years behind bars. The writing is on the wall, an overhaul of SAPS cannot be delayed any longer, the ANC government does so at their own peril. The DA offers a policy on combating crime by creating an honest and professional organization that actually serves and protects South Africans. On a provincial level, we will therefore be tabling a Community Safety Bill in the legislature in due course. Our people deserve to live free of fear and free of crime.
