Today, the Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Northern Cape will submit the necessary documents to the Northern Cape High Court to uphold the outcome of last week’s Special Council Meeting which unseated Mangaliso Matika as Executive Mayor of the Sol Plaatje Local Municipality.
We request that Matika vacates the post and his office. If he fails to do so, the Sheriff must remove him.
It is time for Matika to step aside and to stop clinging to power.
Community unrest has again flared up again as residents do not want this power-hungry individual to lead the municipality any longer.
It is unfortunate that we must seek the assistance of the court in this matter and that Matika does not have the interests of the community at heart.
The majority of councillors, who lawfully requested the Special Council Meeting in accordance with all rules and regulations, voted to remove Matika as the community and the council no longer have any faith in him.
The refusal of the acting Speaker to call the meeting was a violation of the Structures Act and the Standing Rules of the municipality. It is simply unacceptable that the will of the community be subverted simply to protect one man.
Under Matika service delivery has collapsed while tariffs have increased to unsustainable levels. It is no surprise that residents are expressing their frustrations, as they are not happy with Matika’s leadership.
Only a DA-led administration will be able to bring the necessary change which can see service delivery improve, to the benefit of all residents.
