The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Northern Cape is calling on the Cooperative Governance MEC, Bentley Vass, to urgently institute an intervention in the total mismanagement of “Die Eiland” holiday resort in Upington by the DawidKruiper municipality.
“Die Eiland”, one of the region’s most well known resorts, is completely run down. It has been vandalised and has become a popular drinking spot and haven for criminal activities.
Not only are the walls littered with graffiti, but the entire premises is also soaked in litres upon litres of water. This is as a result of leaks in water infrastructure that is not maintained and repaired. As a result, there is an average loss of 20 000 litres of water per day.
Municipal employees, who are still based at the resort, on what one could only describe as a permanent holiday, take little notice of the ongoing water wastage and make no effort to ensure that the leakages are addressed.
With all the empty bottles and rubbish piling up at the resort, the conditions are also posing severe health risks for animals that roam the premises.
We are calling on MEC Vass to hold the municipality accountable for their dire mismanagement of “Die Eiland” and to ensure that the water pipes are fixed. Not only can the province ill afford to waste even a single drop of water, given our proneness to drought conditions, but the municipality can also not afford to shell out money on excessive water bills, especially considering the fact that the municipality just recently requested for an increase in budget to cover water tariffs.
At the same time, the municipality is wasting an opportunity to generate a stable income, grow the economy and create jobs by failing to ensure that the resort is run in a professional manner.
Only change under a DA-led government will ensure that water infrastructure is upgraded and maintained and that the management of municipal resorts is restructured in such a way as to empower the local community and not disempower the budget for service delivery.
