The DA will write to the Premier of the Northern Cape, Sylvia Lucas, requesting that she directly intervenes in Kai !Garib local municipality to ensure that the instruction issued by MEC Alvin Botes asking the Mayor to dismiss the municipal Manager is enforced without delay.
Mayor Marius Louw has openly refused to remove the acting municipal manager Izak de Waal despite being called upon to do so five months ago by MEC Botes.
The acting Municipal Manager at the municipality, Izak de Waal does not possess the relevant competencies, qualifications, experience and knowledge required at a senior management level which was stipulated in the letter from Botes.
This open defiance by the Mayor crippled the proper functioning of the municipality through a deteriorating ability to deliver proper services to residents.
The municipality has also failed to pay its staff, councillors and service providers for a lengthy period, sometimes only paying half the personnel at a time.
It is clear that the ANC does not care about the people in that area and that there is no political will to pull the municipality out of its current situation.
The Premier cannot continue turning a blind eye while a lawful instruction from one of her executive members is openly defied by a Mayor who is intent on protecting the job of a fellow comrade.
The crisis in Kai !Garib local municipality is clear testament that only a DA government is best placed to deliver better services and a transparent government to the residents of the municipality.
The people of the Northern Cape deserve the kind of change that puts the people first, not politicians.
