Release: Immediate
The DA is calling on the MEC of COGHSTA, Bentley Vass, to urgently investigate incidents whereby municipal funds are seemingly walking out the door at the Kai !Garib Municipality in Kakamas.
In the latest incident, a safe containing a large sum of municipal money was reportedly stolen from the municipal Oranje-Sig hostel in Keimoes on Saturday. The case has been reported at the local police station.
On Friday last week, an official’s handbag containing R 65 000 worth of the people’s money reportedly went missing from the municipal offices, without any trail of evidence.
Clearly, this municipality is a playground for criminals.
Numerous criminal cases regarding theft of municipal funds from the municipal offices have been made at the Kakamas Police Station, to no avail. The cases magically disappear before being concluded and nobody is held liable.
The question remains, how much more must be stolen without anyone being held responsible or caught? Is this municipality so deeply infested with theft that the local authorities do not even bother to investigate?
The DA cannot tolerate a situation whereby municipal funds simply fall by the wayside. All lost and stolen money must be accounted for.
The DA has requested information with regards to respective theft cases at Kai !Garib Municipality from Colonel De Bruyn, of the local police station. We have also asked MEC Vass to urgently investigate these cases. He must also establish why the said official keeps so much municipal money in her handbag in the first place.
The Kai !Garib Municipality cannot afford to lose even a cent of money intended for service delivery.
Only change under a DA-led government will ensure that municipal funds are used for service delivery and not for filling the pockets and handbags of connected officials.
