The DA welcomes the invitation by Premier Sylvia Lucas, during her State of the Province Address (SOPA) yesterday, for us to visit the new mental hospital today.
We took her up on her invitation and were pleased by the progress that has been made. After R2 billion and 12 years, it does indeed appear that the hospital is finally on the verge of completion, as per her speech, at 98%.
The Premier has committed to have the facility up and running by June this year. We know, however, that there are a number of challenges that need to be resolved, not least of all a budgetary shortfall for operational costs, as well as the outstanding rates and taxes owed to Sol Plaatje municipalty that could jeopardise the handover of the facility to Health. We appeal to the Premier to give these issues urgent attention. We also want to tell her that we will be holding her to her word.
Mental health care in the Northern Cape has been neglected for far too long.
It’s high time that this monument to corruption be transformed into a symbol of hope for those suffering from mental illness.
