The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Northern Cape is deeply concerned by reports of an alleged physical attack on a farmer by two other farmers, following an alleged stock theft incident in the Carnarvon area on Friday. We are deeply disturbed by the physical injuries sustained by one of the farmers, who is recovering from the ordeal. In a climate where farm attacks in the country are on the rise, we strongly condemn all forms of violence against all farmers.Although stock theft is an increasing threat to farmer safety and sustainability, that must be better addressed by the police, the rule of law must be allowed to take its course. While the DA doesn’t have detailed information relating to the case, we strongly condemn any situation whereby anyone takes the law into their own hands. The DA is aware that criminal cases have been opened with CAS numbers 50/9/2020 and 52/9/2020. We will be closely monitoring the cases through our court watching briefs. The safety of all farmers is paramount to the sustainability of food security and any matters that compromise this must be adequately and urgently dealt with by the justice system. |
