The Democratic Alliance (DA) strongly condemns the growing trend of violence in the city of Kimberley, following the brutal murder of 16-year old Tshepiso Thompson over the weekend.
We are deeply shocked and saddened by the untimely death of Tshepiso, a 16-year-old scholar from Kimberley Boys High School, who was stabbed for his shoes and his clothing in the early hours of yesterday morning. Our deepest sympathies go out to the Thompson family.
Tshepiso and his friends were apparently on their way home when they were approached by a group of men, who robbed him of his Adidas sneakers and denim jacket before fatally stabbing him.
This is the second such incident to rock the city in less than a month.
Earlier in March, Grade 12 Emmanuel Secondary School learner, Boniface Ndlovu, was stabbed to death, also on a Sunday morning, for the shoes he wore to his matric dance.
Young, innocent boys are increasingly murdered for their clothing and cannot walk safely in our streets anymore. Such an unfair and unnecessary loss of life cannot be tolerated.
In a separate incident, an off-duty police officer from Roodepan was also stabbed and shot over the weekend, whilst following up on a police matter. He is thankfully in a stable condition, recovering in a local hospital.
Clearly the ANC government has lost its grip on crime. This is the effect of years of chronic under-training, understaffing, under-resourcing and ender-equipping of the SAPS, combined with a lack of crime intelligence and a poorly equipped detective force to ensure that criminals are brought to book.
It is time to reclaim our streets and create a society where criminals fear the authorities and communities amongst whom they reside, and not the other way around.
We need a government that is committed to rooting out violent crime. We need a police force that will ensure that law and order is maintained in our communities, and that there are effective arrests, prosecutions and convictions of criminals.
The upcoming election is about your future and the future of our children. Don’t expect a vote for the failing ANC to keep you safe.
Only a DA-led government will ensure that our streets are safer and our communities are protected from violence.
