Release: immediate
The DA is both outraged and saddened by the slaying of a 10-year old and his parents in De Aar over the weekend.
On Saturday, when children across the country should have been celebrating Children’s Day, the body of young Gladwill Makaleni was found along with the bodies of his parents, Glenwall and Gladys. All three had been stabbed to death.
Gladwill will now never get to enjoy children’s rights, the very rights that were meant to secure his protection.
The cold-blooded murder of the Makalenis highlights why the soon to be launched 16 Days of Activism Against Violence campaign needs to become a 365 day campaign.
The DA welcomes the speedy arrest of an 18-year old suspect in the case. Given the youthfulness of the suspect, the DA advocates for law enforcement to employ more localised crime reduction tactics in order to divert youth at risk from a life of crime and ensuring that the most likely potential criminals are closely monitored.
Criminal activity cannot be allowed to continue tearing the fabric of communities apart. Children must be safe from harm and citizens must be able to sleep peacefully in their own homes at night.
