Sol Plaatje must turn streetlights on for festive season
by Ofentse Mokae, MPL – DA Northern Cape Provincial Spokesperson on Transport, Safety & Liaison Date: 06 November 2019Release: Immediate The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Northern Cape strongly condemns the spate of violent attacks on elderly women in the province. This comes after a 72-year-old grandmother from Roodepan was raped by a 58-year-old man, allegedly in the same street as the elderly cousins who were raped a few weeks ago.The 72-year-old grandmother is the fourth elderly victim of Gender-Based-Violence (GBV) in just a few weeks. The first incident occurred approximately three weeks ago where two cousins from Galeshewe, aged 76 and 79-years-old, were raped by a young man they considered as their own son. Over the weekend an 86-year-old woman from Warrenton was brutally raped and murdered in her home and was found by the mentally disabled family member whom she looked after. It is worrisome to note that sexual offences against the elderly are increasingly high. Such brutality against our most vulnerable citizens of society cannot be tolerated. The recent incidents of rape have the entire aged community living in fear.As we approach 16 Days of Activism, it is clear that we need to take a firmer and more aggressive approach against perpetrators of GBV.The DA will be conducting an oversight inspection at the police station in Warrenton to ascertain if this station is equipped to deal with all categories of crime. The DA will write to the MEC of Transport, Safety and Liaison, Ms Nontobeko Vilakazi to ask for an urgent investigation into violent attacks against the elderly in recent weeks. We will also table a motion in the Provincial Legislature to challenge the government to address the scourge in GBV.We need real time data that can inform efforts to combat heinous acts of violent crime against the elderly, as well as women and children, and assist us in holding SAPS accountable.
