The Democratic Alliance in the Sol Plaatje Local Municipality will not attend tomorrow’s special council meeting, as we will not participate in an unlawfully convened meeting, where illegal decisions are taken.
We will not legitimise illegal conduct by a cohort of ANC-councillors who are hell-bent on pushing through a punitive municipal budget.
The people of Sol Plaatje took to the streets in their numbers today to express their disgust at the proposed imposition of an electricity tariff structure which will punish the poor and make it difficult for small businesses to operate. Although we do not condone any violence, we share the sentiments of those who are fed up with being told to pay more and to foot the bill for Mangaliso Matika’s luxury lifestyle.
The DA is seeking advice on the necessary legal remedies to take to prevent this unlawfully adopted budget from being implemented. We will not tire in our fight against unfair power tariffs.
It is evident that the people of Sol Plaatje are desperate for the type of change that only a DA-led government can bring. It is only a DA-government that has the political will and the capacity to serve the needs of the people, not the needs of the politicians.
