The Democratic Alliance in the Northern Cape is demanding transparency regarding the business of the Northern Cape Provincial Legislature.
Following the build-up of frustrations relating to the renovations of the old legislature precinct, as well as other matters, the DA is calling on the Speaker, Kenny Mmoeimang, to convene an urgent meeting early next week for all political parties, including himself, the Deputy Speaker, Juanita Beukes, and the Secretary of the Provincial Legislature, Patrick Moopelwa.
The DA is also requesting full disclosure of all costs incurred during the precinct project, including proof of payments made relating to the project, as well as bank statements and names of contractors, since the project commenced at the end of 2016.
While we will continue to ensure that the people’s business not jeopardised, DA MPLs will not attend any committee meetings or legislature arranged oversight inspections until such time that our calls for accountability and transparency are answered positively.
The DA refuses to serve as a rubber stamp during meetings of the Internal Arrangements Committee. We form part and parcel of this legislature and we will not condone any NCPL actions without ensuring that we are fully briefed on them.
While the legislature doesn’t have a direct service delivery role like other government departments, it is responsible for making and upholding laws and holding government accountable. The DA thus cannot allow the legislature to carry on like a law unto itself.
Only change under a DA-led government will ensure that all spheres of government, including legislatures, are held accountable for the management of public funds.
