The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Northern Cape is celebrating its by-election victory in Douglas, Ward 4 of Siyancuma Municipality, yesterday.
The DA obtained 848 votes, increasing its percentage share of the votes from 43,82% in 2016, to 50,63% in yesterday’s by-election. At the same time, the ANC’s share of votes declined from 37,12% in 2016 to 35,16%. This is despite the ANC having hijacked a government organised Women’s Day event to campaign and the ruling party having abused state resources in its failed attempt to win the by-election.
This is a clear indication that more and more people are realising that the ANC is corrupt to the core, that the ANC is increasingly intent on destroying our democracy, and that the ANC will never be able to self-correct.
The fact that the DA continues to display positive growth in the Northern Cape, and that we are steadily making inroads in non-traditional areas, reaffirms our belief that we are on track to bring change to the Northern Cape in 2019.
Our success also contradicts the naysayers, who are desperately trying to detract from the DA’s policy on open debate within the party, to paint a picture of a DA that is confused and at odds with itself. The truth is that the DA stands strong and remains more focused than ever before on removing the ANC from power.
The DA is the only political party that stands for all South Africans, regardless of race. The DA is also the only political party that fights for those oppressed by corruption and unemployment.
It is indeed refreshing to see that the people of South Africa can see through attempts of the ANC to tarnish the reputation of the DA.
The DA would like to thank all citizens who lent us their vote in the Siyancuma by-election. We are confident that we have selected a strong candidate in Lemfvia Van Niekerk, who carries the concerns of the Douglas community close to her heart and has proven time and again that she is willing to take up the fight of the community for improved service delivery.
We encourage all voters to monitor dates for the upcoming voter registration weekend. It is critical that all citizens of voting age ensure that they are registered to vote in the 2019 National and Provincial elections. Every single vote is important and will play a crucial role in building one South Africa for all under a DA-led government.
