We look forward to an intervention by the Green Scorpions, after we have previously bought the issue to the attention of the Sol Plaatje Local Municipality, the Public Protector and the South African Human Rights Commission on numerous occasions. We appreciate the assistance from the Green Scorpions, as our people have knocked on every possible door without receiving answers.
While municipal workers at times unblock drains, a lasting solution is needed for this ongoing sanitation crisis. Sol Plaatje’s actions are limited to addressing the symptoms, but never resolves the root cause.
Sewage overflows, blocked drains and raw sanitation spills have become a frequent occurrence in the area. Residents are struggling on a daily basis with raw sewage running down the street and into their homes, making it impossible to cook, clean or perform any of life’s daily tasks.
We spoke to one family where everyone is ill from ongoing exposure to raw sewage.
Another young entrepreneur suffered extensive damage to his sound equipment, costing more than R100 000, as a result of raw sewage flooding through the garage where his equipment is stored. Other residents who run businesses from their homes are concerned that clients no longer want to visit their offices due to the raw sewage in the streets.
At another home, where raw sewage flooded the house, we are told that residents get poor feedback and assistance when they report their problems to Sol Plaatje. One lady was even told to stop calling the municipal call centre!
It is absolutely unacceptable that residents continue to be denied their access to basic services and are, in the process, being exposed to serious health risks. The ANC-led municipality has shown no interest in providing a permanent solution to this problem.
Only a DA-led government can bring change that puts the people first and accelerates the delivery of quality services. We are to build a working province and One South Africa for all.
