Note to Editors: Please find attached soundbites in English & Afrikaans from Veronica Van Dyk, MP.The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Northern Cape has requested Khai-Ma Municipality to institute an investigation into whether or not a municipal official, who was arrested after travelling with a large stash of alcohol between Pofadder and Onseepkans, was on duty at the time. The municipal official in question, is tasked with travelling between towns within the municipality. He, and another person were stopped by police yesterday on the road to Onseepkans, while travelling via the R358 past the solar plant. They were found to be with a number of containers of box wine, as well as bottles of sherry, brandy and whiskey. The DA condemns the actions of the municipal official. Public servants should be setting an example and not implicating themselves in activities that have been forbidden by the state. The DA specifically wants to know whether the official was travelling with a municipal permit and during work hours, as this calls for serious disciplinary action. At the same time, it is not surprising that the illicit movement of alcohol has been on the increase. The ongoing hard lockdown is unfortunately causing a thriving black market, at the expense of the state and to the benefit of criminals. The DA hopes that government will soon take a more rational approach towards some of the restrictions, to implement the DA’s proposed smart lockdown, to ensure that the economy is propelled back into action and that illicit markets, which steal money out of the hands of legal businesses, are stunted. This is necessary to ensure that the dignity of those, who have been left without an income, is again restored. |
