The Democratic Alliance welcomes the judgement delivered today in the Northern Cape High Court in Kimberley regarding the management of the Mittah Seperepere International Convention Centre.
We have long supported the termination of the contract between the provincial government and Umfana Business Enterprise CC and Silver Solutions CC JV as well as International Convention Solutions CC, as it was becoming increasingly clear that the supposed service providers were robbing the state blind. While these politically connected individuals were making money hand over fist, the local municipality is owed millions in rates and taxes.
Following the order made by the court, we call on the Northern Cape Department of Economic Development & Tourism to insource the management and maintenance of the venue. The Mittah Seperepere International Convention Centre is a flagship venue for Kimberley and is frequently used for the hosting of big ticket events. It can therefore be a source of much-needed revenue for the province and used to promote our province as a tourism destination, in line with the provincial tourism plan.
We also call for the audited financial information, specifically on the generation of revenue, to be made available for the interrogation by the Standing Committee on Public Accounts. It is our responsibility to ensure that every cent owed to the provincial government is paid back by those who wish to abuse our public infrastructure for their personal gain.
