The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Northern Cape will not let the shock redeployment of Mangaliso Matika to the Northern Cape Provincial Legislature, stop us in our quest to have him held accountable for his actions during his time as Sol Plaatje mayor.
While Matika was officially sworn in as an MPL today and may hold a new title, he does not start off on a clean slate.
Matika previously facilitated the rental of his own personal accommodation through Sol Plaatje despite the fact that Council voted against the provision for official accommodation for the mayor and despite the fact that Council never approved the rental agreement of the mayor’s house in Henry Schmidt Street, Kimberley.
Matika also ensured that his cronies, including Provincial Police Commissioner Rismati Shivuri, had access to cheap municipal land at the expense of Previously Disadvantaged Individuals (PDI’s), who are desperate for erven.
These are only two of the irregular activities that Matika was involved in.
The DA will resubmit evidence regarding Matika’s undue housing benefits to the Public Protector, for investigation, as it is clear that the ANC does not care about tackling corruption within its own ranks.
Instead, the failing ANC is proud to retain Matika as a public representative, despite the total lack of faith in him as demonstrated by the greater Kimberley community.
The failing ANC is also intent on recycling old, dirty hands in order to keep their closed crony society alive. All that matters to them is ensuring that they continue benefitting from state funds, at the expense of the poorest of the poor who are denied services as a result.
Matika’s new appointment is an insult to the all the people of the Northern Cape and will do nothing to improve the dire state of unemployment, the horrifying state of crime and the pitiful state of health services in the province.
Only change under a DA-led government will ensure that the cycle of corruption in government is broken so that all state funds are directed towards building a better future for all South Africans, not just the ANC-connected.
