The Democratic Alliance in the Sol Plaatje Local Municipality will push ahead with a motion of no confidence in the mayor, Mangaliso Matika, at the next scheduled council meeting. Our councillors walked out of a council meeting today in protest against his actions, which proved clinically that he has become a law unto himself.
The mayor initially closed the public gallery in a futile attempt to block members of the public and the media from attending the proceedings. He is unwilling to account to the public and scared that the people will hear the truth. One could clearly feel the animosity and the hostility in the chambers, which is not the picture that the ANC in the region want to paint ahead of next year’s elections.
Our DA councillors will use the motion of no confidence to rid the municipality of this mayor, who has failed to perform the functions of his office in good faith and who has failed to act in the best interests of the municipality. So bad is his political bias that he has publicly insinuated one needs to be a member of the ANC in order to receive good municipal services. Indeed, he has gone so far as to instruct officials not to deliver services in non-ANC wards.
Punishing people for exercising their right to vote goes against the very grain of our democracy.
The mayor has also been criminally charged after physically attacking a female staff member in his own office, sending the message that violence against women and violence in the workplace is tolerable. His abuse of municipal resources is well documented, and ranges from facilitating the rental of his own personal accommodation through the Sol Plaatje Municipality at the cost of R14 000 a month, to using more than R1 million in municipal funds to splash out on a new luxury vehicle for himself. This is while residents are shivering in informal settlements and the municipal fleet is at a virtual standstill.
He has shown his true colours as a self-serving, corrupt, abusive dictator who has no place in our municipality. The ANC might be comfortable allowing such a politician in its ranks, but the DA finds it absolutely unacceptable that such a political bully remain in power for one day longer.
The people of Sol Plaatje deserve a Change, with a DA-led government, who will prioritise their needs above petty party politics.
