The dismissal of John Block’s appeal of his jail sentence of 15 years will allow for justice to finally take its course.
The Democratic Alliance has opposed John Block’s unscrupulous leadership from day one. We never shied away from speaking out on his wheeling and dealings in government, which left a lasting legacy of failed projects and “lost” funds, meant for the empowerment of people oppressed by poverty and unemployment.
We called upon former Premier Hazel Jenkins, the late acting Premier Grizelda Cjiekella and current Premier Sylvia Lucas, on numerous occasions, to remove John Block from their respective cabinets and we participated in legislature debates calling for his removal.
We will be very satisfied to see John Block serve jail time for many years to come. He deserves a prison sentence because, over a number of years, he denied government services to people oppressed by a failed ANC by lining his own pockets with millions of rands of state funds, instead of investing these funds towards improving service delivery.
John Block greatly contributed to the rot and massive decline within the Northern Cape provincial government. He created a closed crony society where he and his associates manipulated government business for their own personal gain, at the cost of service delivery and to the detriment of the economy. This was done without any consideration for the thousands of people living in the Northern Cape who need jobs and basic assistance to survive.
While the DA is very pleased with the outcome of the appeal, it must be noted that prison time for John Block alone won’t save the Northern Cape from the clutches of corruption. This is because many of Block’s associates continue to fill senior government positions and high profile political positions. They, through the ANC, are continuing with Block’s legacy and their inner circle continues to loot the state.
The ANC can never self-correct. The only way to clean up the Northern Cape government is to remove the ANC through the ballot box.
Only change under a DA-led government, that has a zero-tolerance approach towards corruption, will ensure that the people’s money is channeled towards providing services and stimulating economic growth that guarantees access to job opportunities.
