Due to factionalism within the ANC’s ranks which has derailed council meetings, the Gamagara Local Municipality in the Northern Cape will be placed under administration in terms of section 139(1)(c) of the Constitution. Accordingly, the municipal council will be dissolved and an administrator appointed until a new council is declared elected.
The issue at hand is the failure of the seven ANC councillors to attend scheduled council meetings, which means that the five DA councillors and one EFF councillor did not have a quorum to constitute the municipal council.
The reason for the ANC councillors’ refusal to attend the meetings is simply factionalism. Like little children fighting over a toy, they cannot agree on a mayoral candidate. National leaders from the ANC have tried to intervene in this squabble, but the councillors have refused to listen. Now, out of anger and spite, the MEC has decided to punish an entire municipality because his own political house is not in order.
It is the first time in the Northern Cape’s history that this drastic step will be taken and shows how low the ANC is prepared to go in its desperate attempts to grab power. The voice of the electorate, who recently chose their own representatives, is being ignored and the ordinary man on the street must now pay the price for the ANC’s internal destruction.
