The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Northern Cape is calling on the MEC of Cooperative Governance (COGHSTA), Bentley Vass, to urgently intervene in near collapse of Kai !Garib municipality. This comes as numerous municipal assets are on the verge of being seized by the Sheriff of the court.
It is believed that the municipality is facing the loss of assets due to the non-payment of a contractor, who has taken legal action.
Financially, this municipality is already on its knees because of a number of issues, including the loss of thousands of rands as a result of theft within the municipality.
The DA has attempted, on numerous occasions, to bring these issues to the attention of MEC Vass and Premier Sylvia Lucas but it seems that our pleas have fallen on deaf ears.
The current situation comes as no surprise, given that the Municipal Manager is underqualified and that ongoing maladministration and corruption are the order of the day and have led to the ultimate decline of the financial state of the Kai !Garib municipality.
The DA is calling on the MEC and Premier to respond to our requests for intervention.
In the meantime, we will also submit a motion calling for the removal of both the mayor and the MM, who have proven their inability to ensure the effective running of Kai !Garib municipality.
It is not fair that the community of Kakamas must continue to pay for the failures of high ranking officials and politicians, who are robbing the community of their rights to basic service delivery.
Only change under a DA-led government will ensure that Kai !Garib municipality is corruption-free and truly serves the needs of the local community.
