The ANC has once again proven that it protects corruption, after ANC councillors in Ga Segonyana Municipality yesterday supported the renewal of the contract of the Municipal Manager (MM), Eddie Ntefang who is facing very serious fraud charges. Ntefang’s current contract officially comes to an end today, 30 June 2017.
Yesterday, at a local council meeting, the DA vehemently opposed the three-month renewal of the MM’s contract for the following key reasons:
He has been investigated by the Hawks for his involvement in serious allegations of fraud. He is due to appear in court next week, on 5 July 2017, on charges of fraud relating to the awarding of a municipal contract to the value of R9,8 million. One of his co-accused is also believed to be a former CFO of the municipality.
Only 33% of the municipality’s key performance areas have been met under his leadership.
There is no obligation on the municipality to renew a contract which comes to an end. Considering the MM’s alleged involvement in fraud and his poor track record in terms of performance, the DA strongly believes that it would be better for the council not to renew his contract.
By failing to take the allegations against the MM seriously, the ANC is condoning corruption and, in turn, the looting of taxpayers’ money at the expense of service delivery.
By ignoring the MM’s past performance, the ANC is also awarding mediocrity and showing its complete disrespect for the community of Ga Segoynana, who deserve quality and efficient service delivery.
The DA will continue to oppose Ntefang’s re-appointment. We will also be watching his every move in order to safeguard the municipality’s purse.
