Release: Immediate
Type: Press Statement
The Democratic Alliance (DA) has requested the legislature portfolio committee on Education to convene a meeting early in the new year to facilitate an intervention in the Karos school project.
The overdue project is fraught with challenges.
Dawid Kruiper Municipality is uneasy about a number of issues of non-compliance with building regulations, including that the Erf on which the school is being built has, to date, not been registered and that building plans were never submitted to the municipality.
The municipality has approached the Department of Education with its grievances but they have failed to respond to the municipality’s concerns.
The DA is concerned that, if this matter is not amicably resolved soon, it could escalate into a feud between the municipality and the department.
Construction of the school already commenced in 2015. After many setbacks, the school building is finally roof high. So near to completion, government can ill-afford to become involved in protracted battles with itself, resulting in unnecessary delays, as well as fruitless and wasteful expenditure.
I have requested the Portfolio Committee Chairperson on Education, Maruping Lekwene, to convene a meeting with all stakeholders, including the municipality, the Departments of Education and Roads and Public Works, the Independent Development Trust (IDT) and the contractors, in order to settle this matter.
As part of our oversight role, the legislature must ensure that the Karos project does not become another “psychiatric hospital”, which has remained under construction for 11-years due to countless delays.
The future of our children must be the determining factor in any resolutions reached regarding the way forward for the Karos school project, and nothing else.
