The DA in the Northern Cape urges the Northern Cape Provincial Legislature to convene an urgent meeting to receive a briefing from the departments of Education and Transport, Safety & Liaison regarding the collapse of the learner transport in the province.
This morning, media reports highlighted that two buses used for learner transport in Phokwane have been impounded by law enforcement two weeks ago. While SAPS confirms that the buses have been impounded, the Department of Transport, Safety & Liaison denies any knowledge of the matter.
How is it possible that learners can be left without transport for two weeks and the department doesn’t know about it?
This is not an isolated incidence and similar challenges occur throughout the province. Very few areas have safe, reliable learner transport available to learners on a daily basis. When we raise our concerns with one department, they refer us to the other department. While neither department is willing to claim full responsibility for the function, our learners are left to suffer.
We will continue to remind the Legislature that this briefing must be dealt with as soon as possible, because the future of our learners hangs in the balance.
