As communities of the Northern Cape and neighboring provinces continue to tally the damages caused by the widespread veld fires over the course of the last few weeks, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the farmers, workers, families and their friends in the affected areas for the impeccable example they have set for all of us as South Africans.
In a time when our country is being torn apart by greed, corruption and dishonesty, these communities have demonstrated the true greatness that unites us all as they managed to put aside their differences to fight a blaze that didn’t discriminate on grounds of gender, age, race or economic status.
It has been said that all that is required for the world to unite is for mankind to face a common enemy. Despite the widespread damages, the brave people of our province stood together and with some help from rains on Saturday, they ended the rampage of an unforgiving opponent.
While the fires were tangible in every sense of the word, there is another less noticeable yet equally visible foe that we should now stand against as people of the province as corruption is still spreading out of control.
It too can take away your livelihood or ruin your future. It is a direct threat to our safety and well being and contributes to the gradual disintegration that is happening all around us.
Little can be done to prevent a natural disaster but the people of the Northern Cape showed that they can overcome one. Let us just hope that they will show the same unification in preventing the unnatural disaster that is caused by the selfish desire to empower and enrich your Party and yourself at the cost of others.
