4 October 2016
World Teachers’ Day on the 5th of October 2016 provides an ideal opportunity to reflect on the nature of support given to educators.
We have many excellent educators at schools in the province who are willing and able to deliver the highest quality of education to our children. We need to ensure that their welfare and safety is protected. One of the many measures we should implement is a comprehensive performance management system which rewards those who do well and incentivises those who can do better.
We also need to ensure that teachers are trained for excellence. The Northern Cape Department of Education has done fairly well in providing training programmes on inclusive education. We need more programmes of this nature to ensure that our educators are capable of teaching all of our learners.
Educators who are empowered to teach ensures that our children enjoy access to quality education. Indeed, the most effective way to improve education outcomes is to improve the quality of educators.
