DA condemns alleged abuse of state funds
The Democratic Alliance will be submitting parliamentary questions to all Departments in the Northern Cape Provincial Government to ascertain whether each of the MEC’s at their helm, have used the government credit for unauthorized personal purchases.
This comes after recent media reports, which allege the MEC for Transport, Safety and Liaison, Patrick Mabilo, had used his state credit card for seemingly personal purchases, including a holiday in Mozambique, where he rang-up atleast R9 000.
It is totally unacceptable that such a high-income individual, such as an MEC, could dip into state funds meant for official duties, to pay for their personal purchases. It is most concerning also that there seems to be a sense of impunity by the MEC in his purchases, considering that an alleged total of R35 000 was spent in a single month!
If these allegations are true, then the DA is calling for MEC Mabilo to follow the example of former Gauteng MEC for Housing, Humphery Mmemezi, who had committed a similar offence, and resign.
The DA believes all MEC’s must be scrutinized in this regard. It is morally unacceptable for political office bearers to use state funds to pay for personal goods and luxuries, especially whilst the unemployed poor struggle to make ends meet, and even working people have heeded tough times, and are tightening their belts.
