The Democratic Alliance demands that the MEC for Finance, Economic Development & Tourism, Mac Jack, repay the public funds wasted on a trip to the Tourism Indaba held in Durban this week.
We have it on good authority that bookings were made for accommodation and flights for Mac Jack, but that he never once set foot inside the venue where the indaba was being held. The MEC was therefore abusing public funds, which must be used for the economic development of the province, to pay for a frolic of his own. As such, he must be held accountable and repay this money from his pocket.
Mac Jack is, of course, no stranger to all sorts of missions and expeditions which do not bear fruit for the province. In his days as MEC for Health, he was part of a delegation to the Ultimate Hunters’ Market in Las Vegas which cost taxpayers an estimated R500 000. This event describes its purposes as to “book hunts, rendezvous with old friends and shop for the latest guns and hunting equipment”.
The MEC is happy to receive the praise for excellent work done to drive the development of the provincial tourism industry by the Northern Cape Tourism Authority, but he is apparently not willing to do any of the work himself. He would rather use the indaba as an excuse to have some fun and expect that the taxpayers must foot the bill.
It is time for a Total Change in the Northern Cape, with a DA-led government which prioritises economic growth and the development of the province above parties for politicians.
