The Democratic Alliance in the Northern Cape will be reporting the Gamagara Local Municipality to the Member of the Executive Council for Co-operative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs.
We demand an urgent investigation into the problems at the sewerage pump station between Boekenhout and Melkbos Street in Kathu. Since 2014, it has become a regular occurrence that sewerage overflows from the pump station. The serious health risks that the overflow of sewerage poses to humans and animals cannot be overestimated and requires that immediate action must be taken to mitigate the consequences. The Sishen pump station and the 247 Fleming street pump station are also problematic.
The reasons given for the problems experienced at the pump stations shows that municipal infrastructure is crumbling to dust under the current administration. Blockages might occur, but should be lessened through regular upkeeping and maintenance of the drains. Spare parts, backup pumps and generators should be readily accessible to ensure that faults can be corrected as they occur. How can the teams working on these stations do their jobs without the necessary support and equipment? It has even reached the level where transport is not always available for the teams working at the stations.
When reported, the municipal administration seems to care very little about the problems experienced. A resident who contacted the technical director of the municipality on his cellphone reports that he was more concerned about his privacy than anything else. His suggestion to contact his office directly bore no fruit, as the number he provided could not be reached.
It cannot be that residents are exposed to serious health risks while the municipality sits back and does nothing. We demand that the MEC investigates the matter and holds the individuals to account for their failure to provide basic services at an acceptable level.
We know that these problems would not occur under a DA administration. We know that the people of Gamagara are tired of these difficulties and are longing for the change that a DA-led administration can bring.
