While the Democratic Alliance in the Northern Cape welcomes the intervention from the Northern Cape Department of Education at the Hantam High School in Calvinia, it is clear that the problem of escalating costs is not limited to one school alone.
As much as we appreciate the department’s commitment to investigating the financial woes at the school and assisting the school to the tune of R150 000 to cover the Eskom bill, more schools are going to require intervention as the year progresses. We need the newly formed task team to establish a holistic, provincial approach to assisting all cash-strapped schools.
As a quintile four school, Hantam High School receives school fees from its’ learners. One can therefore just imagine how difficult it can be for schools in quintiles one to three, where learners are not in a position to make financial contributions, to cover all the necessary costs.
