The DA is outraged by the ANC’s blatant abuse of municipal resources for campaigning purposes in Kathu Plaas (Ward 7) ahead of the upcoming by-election scheduled to take place in Gamagara Municipality on 20 September 2017.
This comes after newly-elected mayor, Edwin Hantiese, last week not only allowed his own Mayoral Outreach Programme to be taken over for party political mileage but also hijacked wheelbarrows and farming implements, that were donated to the municipality, in order to boost the campaign of ANC candidate, Kagisho Mangoakwe. A photograph posted on Facebook clearly captures Hantiese and Mangoakwe distributing the tools. See photo here.
The DA is extremely concerned by the timing of the Mayoral Outreach Programme, which conveniently took place in Ward 7, just three weeks before the scheduled by-election. We are also deeply suspicious of the fact that wheelbarrows were initially meant to be distributed in Kathu Plaas in July this year, as part of the Nelson Mandela Day Programme.
It seems that Hantiese has failed to distinguish the difference between party and state and has influenced municipal processes in a bid to promote Mangoakwe.
The mayor’s use of municipal resources in an attempt to boost an ANC by-election campaign is deplorable. Government resources should be allocated equitably to all poor and needy residents of the Northern Cape. They should not be manipulated to become vote-winning tools amongst the destitute.
In much the same way, service delivery should be a year-round project and not just a last ditch attempt to secure additional votes by hastily closing holes in the street, as also occurred during the Mayoral Outreach Programme.
The DA will submit a motion with notice to council requesting that a disciplinary committee be convened to investigate the distribution of the municipality’s wheelbarrows and farming implements.
Hantiese must not be allowed to abuse his position as Mayor in order to promote the interests of any political party, as he has done. He must be reprimanded for his actions.
