The recent report from StatsSA on poverty trends in South Africa clearly shows that the ANC-led Northern Cape administration lacks a coherent, practical plan to eradicate poverty.
Between 2011 and 2015, the poverty headcount and the poverty gap increased in the Northern Cape, with the poverty gap increasing from 26% in 2011 to 28% in 2015.
Women and children tend to suffer the most. With the economy now in the grip of a recession, the levels of poverty in the province are likely to increase as there is no clear leadership from the provincial administration on the issue.
It is common cause that the public funds meant for service delivery are frequently misused or misappropriated, with the majority of economic development schemes in the province aimed at the enrichment of the politically connected elite rather than the true empowerment of emerging entrepreneurs.
While unemployment and poverty skyrocket, the provincial administration cannot even renew its Provincial Growth and Development Strategy!
It is clear that the ANC can no longer bring any hope of economic opportunity to those who need it most.
