Following great unhappiness at Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe Hospital earlier this week regarding a dire shortage of staff, especially nurses, the DA has learnt from patients that the same hospital has also run out of hand soap.It is unacceptable for any health facility, let alone a tertiary hospital that deals with high level surgical procedures, to find itself in this position. This poses a direct risk to patients and staff alike, as it nullifies any attempts at infection control. The DA suspects that, as is the case with most other health-related out of stocks, the problem once again lies with the department’s failure to pay suppliers. This could be due to two reasons, either because the department is out of pocket or because the financial procurement delegations are still being controlled at the provincial head office.Regardless of the exact reason, the situation demands urgent attention from Health MEC, Mase Manopole. The current state of health care in the province once again showcases why rolling out a National Health Insurance will not work.By further centralising finance and HR delegations, as the NHI calls for, high levels of out of stocks will escalate even further. That is why the DA is calling on government to rather consider the DA’s Sizani Universal Healthcare system, which calls for investment and improvement of the public health system so that people are at the centre of any reform. |
