Today, councillors from the DA and the EFF jointly laid criminal charges against the acting Speaker of the Sol Plaatje Local Municipality, Ben Springbok for failing to restore order and decorum in council.
Myself, DA councillor Bernadette Francis, DA councillor Sharon Steyn, EFF councillor Millicent Moloholo and EFF councillor Herbert Miller went to SAPS for recourse.
These charges emanate from Springbok’s conduct during the chaotic special council meeting held on Friday. Supporters of the ANC, who were seated in the public gallery, repeatedly disrupted proceedings.
They threw plastic bottles and glass items at opposition councillors, exposing their safety and lives to serious risk.
Yet, despite the chaos evident in council, the acting Speaker deliberately failed to act. It is incumbent upon him, as the person in charge of proceedings, to ensure that order is maintained. He ignored requests from the opposition councillors to remove the rowdy supporters from the public gallery, he failed to order their removal himself and he failed to give any instruction whatsoever to the security guards of the municipality.
It is simply unacceptable that councillors are exposed to such violence and that the acting Speaker just sits by.
We will continue to hold the acting Speaker to account for his wrongdoing.
