Dying diggers of Namaqualand need saving

Release: Immediate |
Note to Editors: Please find attached a soundbite in English from Grantham Steenkamp, MPL.The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Northern Cape (NC) will submit a letter to the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) regarding the recent dissolution of the Phokwane Municipal Council. This municipality was dissolved in May this year due to ongoing factionalism and the establishment of multiple power bases that caused havoc and dysfunction within the institution.Despite publicly announcing the dissolution of the institution, the DA has it on good authority that the Minister for CoGHSTA, Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, never officially signed the declaration to confirm the dissolution. Many councillors from this area are still, to this day, attending council meetings and continuing with their duties although they have not earned their monthly salaries since June this year.It is shocking and unnerving to note that the MEC did not follow due processes while the IEC has already released the by-election ward list for the upcoming by-elections in November this year. The uncertainty of this municipality’s future is scary and residents are already paying the price of what seems to be an obliterated institution. Communities in and around Hartswater have not had basic services delivered to them since the announcement of the dissolution.Dlamini-Zuma needs to urgently sign the declaration to officially declare the dissolution of the Phokwane municipality as it is unlawful to continue procedures when due processes are not followed.Local government cannot be handled with a run-of-the-mill attitude as it always affects the taxpayer negatively and is left without repair. |
