The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Northern Cape is calling on MEC of COGHSTA, Bentley Vass, to ensure that Dikgatlong local municipality settles its outstanding debt so that residents of Longlands can live in a sewage free environment.

This comes as community members continue for the fourth consecutive month, to battle sewage overflows that have engulfed their yards and now extend right up to their doorsteps.
The sewerage situation in Longlands is not an isolated case within Dikgatlong municipality. Over the past few months, a primary school in Barkley West has also had to deal with ongoing sewage overflows.
It is also reported that the drinking water at the local clinic is not safe for consumption, as all water in the area is suspected of being polluted with raw sewage.
The private company Coastal Tool Hire has been to the affected areas in Longlands where drains are blocked and overflowing but due to unsettled debt owed by the municipality to the company, the sewerage crisis cannot be fixed. In the meantime, the municipality is simply extracting drains manually, which provides only intermittent relief.
Temporary solutions to permanent and growing sewerage problems cannot be tolerated.
The DA will write to MEC Vass to request an intervention, failing which we will report the matter to the Office of the Public Protector, the South African Human Rights Commission and the Green Scorpions.
We cannot allow inaction by government to create breeding grounds of disease.
Only change under a DA -led government will ensure the accelerated delivery of services and that sewerage systems are upgraded and maintained to prevent the pollution of our environment and safeguard people’s living conditions.
We are working towards building and working province and One South Africa for all.
