Dying diggers of Namaqualand need saving

| The whole of Ritchie and Modderrivier have been left high and dry without water since Tuesday, with only empty promises from Sol Plaatje municipality that the pump will be fixed.While the pump was reported to be full of mud, and a new pump was to be installed on Wednesday, the water remains off four days later.In effect, residents, many of whom are very poor, are suffering.While JoJo tanks were made available to residents of Ritchie, the water is not fit for human consumption. People instead used the water for washing but even their clothes have come out dirty. Modderriver meanwhile has no tanks for the residents.Sol Plaatje municipality is responsible for depriving people of their basic human right to water. They need to come clear on exactly what the problem is. At the same time, they need to implement adequate interim measures to ensure that people have access to especially drinking water, as the poorer communities cannot afford to buy themselves bottled water.The longer that Ritchie and Modderrivier remain without water, the clearer it becomes that the ANC is an uncaring and inefficient government that places its own survival above the basic needs of the people who voted for it.After 25-years under an ANC government in the Northern Cape, peoples’ struggles have continued to grow. It is time for people to open their eyes and take the brave step of changing their vote so that they can also change their future.In the DA run Western Cape, even in the time of a severe drought, at no time were residents without water. This is the DA difference. This is why we say that only change under a DA led government will speed up access to basic service delivery.On 8th of May, people have a choice to either continue suffering under a corrupt and inefficient ANC government, or they can vote for the DA that has proved that it implements clean governance and is far more caring, efficient and effective than any ANC government.Only change under the DA will bring the change that the people of the Northern Cape desire and that will build One South Africa for All. |
