Note to Editors: Please find attached soundbites in English & Afrikaans from Fawzia Rhoda, MPL. The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Northern Cape will request an immediate investigation into an apparent cover-up of ANC criminality by the South African Police Service in De Aar. The facts seem to support some collusion to protect a politically connected individual from the consequences of a collision. On Thursday, the ANC councillor for Ward 2 in the Emthanjeni Local Municipality managed to crash his car into the wall of a private residence (see pics here, here and here). From eyewitness accounts, and from the damage caused, it appears that the councillor was heavily intoxicated at the time. Damage to the property is conservatively estimated at R10 000.It also appears that the ANC councillor does not have a driver’s license. For an ordinary South African without an ANC membership card, such an incident would mean spending the weekend in the nearest police facility and finding yourself in the closest Magistrate’s Court on Monday. But for those who keep their ANC membership up to date, there appears to be no consequences.Instead of arresting the councillor, it seems as if SAPS leapt into action to protect him. He was removed from the scene of devastation and taken to hospital for treatment of a dislocated shoulder. It does not appear as though a breathalyzer test was conducted or if any criminal investigation was performed. In fact, it seems that the criminal investigation required is one into the misconduct of some SAPS officials who seem to care more for the skin of one ANC councillor than for the safety of a community whom they are sworn to protect. It may be that SAPS officials were threatened or felt under duress to protect the councillor of the ruling party rather than to protect the public.Community members are up in arms, and rightfully so. Who can we turn to for protection if SAPS becomes nothing more than a security firm for the ANC?There are many good men and women in blue, who serve our communities diligently and at great risk to their own lives. We know that there are hard-working and decent citizens serving in our police force. It’s just a pity that none of them were on site that day. |
