Release: Immediate
Type: Press Statement
The DA notes the appearance in court on Friday of a SASSA employee charged with contravention of the National Consumer Protection Act. She allegedly drew money from ATMs using SASSA cards and SASSA employees based in the Barkley West local office allege that she fraudulently misused the SASSA cards.
The DA calls on the department of Social Development to suspend the suspect from her duties.
The MEC for Social Development, Gift van Staden, must do everything in his power to ensure that this kind of corruption does not occur and that SASSA funds are used what it is intended for, namely to help the poor.
The DA also calls upon the public to work together with the authorities in helping to expose fraudsters, especially those who rob the poor of their livelihood. We must ensure that we root out all forms of corruption within SASSA, as fraud robs the poor of the opportunity to improve their lives.
