While the Democratic Alliance welcomes an investigation into wrongdoing and maladministration at the Sol Plaatje Local Municipality, the section 106 intervention announced today by the MEC for COGHSTA, Bentley Vass, is simply too little being done far too late.
The terms of reference adequately capture the problems experienced at the municipality, but the investigation should be undertaken by a truly independent body if it is to have any credibility whatsoever.
Most of the problems included in the terms of reference have already been reported at various platforms and have fallen on deaf ears. It is only now that Kimberley is burning that the provincial government scrambles to try and do something. For example, one of the matters to be investigated by the task team includes problems with housing in Lerato Park, yet the department of COGHSTA is one of the key stakeholders in this project. You cannot be part of the problem and then announce that you are going to be part of the solution.
Once again, the ANC-led provincial government is going to extreme lengths simply to protect one man. The DA will continue to push for the removal of Mangaliso Matika as mayor, as he proved time and again that he does not have the capacity to lead the municipality and as recent service delivery protests illustrate that the community has lost faith in him.
If the ANC was genuine on this matter, it would have acted a long time ago. Now that Kimberley is burning, the ANC continues to support and protect the interests of one individual, just in the case of Zuma. The style of leadership displayed by the ANC is completely disgusting. We know that the people will be given another opportunity to vote in 2019 and that change will come under a DA-led administration.
The only hope for the Northern Cape is for change led under a DA-led government that will build communities and one South Africa for all, where the people come first, quality services are delivered and jobs are created.
