The DA condemns the way in which Mayor Mangaliso Matika has again bypassed proper consultation channels and, out of his own, appointed his good friend, Ruth Sebolecwe, to the position of acting Municipal Manager of Sol Plaatje municipality.
Despite serious grievances from community members, which have led to unrest in the city, Matika has decided to run a one-man show. Today, during a Special Council Meeting, following ongoing protests in the city, Matika merely presented council with the name of his new deployee, expecting council to rubber stamp her appointment, which was already made yesterday.
This comes after MM, Goolam Akharwray and CFO, Lydia Mahloko, have been placed on precautionary suspension pending an investigation into community complaints against them.
The DA distances itself from Sebolecwe’s appointment. It is clear that despite the riotous behavior of community members since Thursday last week, Matika has still not heard their voices.
Under Sebolecwa, unlawful activities within Sol Plaatje can be expected to get worse not better, with service delivery also due to decline even further due to interference from Matika.
The DA is fully aware that Sol Plaatje has become a cash cow that channels funding to the ANC. That is why it is so difficult to get rid of Matika.
The DA has said it before and we will say it again, Matika must go and he must take his ANC with him. They do not carry the true interests of the Kimberley community on their hearts.
Only change under a DA-led government will ensure that Sol Plaatje municipality becomes responsive to the needs of the people of Kimberley and delivers services that improve the quality of the lives of everyone residing here.
