The Democratic Alliance in the Northern Cape will request that the Standing Committee on Gender, Women, Youth & Persons with Disabilities convene urgently to address the increasing scourge of violence against woman and children in the province.
We will request that the Office of the Premier as well as the department of Transport, Safety & Liaison and the department of Social Development come to present their coordinated strategies on how the provincial government will combat the rise in violence against our vulnerable people.
Gender-based violence requires a structured, integrated response from all provincial stakeholders. We cannot just have a debate here and an outreach programme there if, at the end of the day, violence against women and children are still increasing.
We also need to involve communities and community-based organisations. Communities must start helping one another and not turn a blind eye to the incidences of domestic violence and child abuse which happen behind closed doors. Women must be empowered to leave abusive relationships and must be protected from abusive partners.
The Democratic Alliance supports the creation of safer societies. Recent events have shown how important it is that we begin, in all earnest, to work together to make progress towards a truly non-violent society.
