The Democratic Alliance in the Northern Cape urges the MEC for Social Development to prioritise the finalization and operationalization of the substance abuse rehabilitation centre in Kimberley.
It is true that idleness kills and in the absence of opportunities, without reasonable hope of employment or access to recreational facilities, many youngsters are turning to drugs. We cannot continue to lose generations of clever and talented young people to the evils of substance abuse. And yet the failing ANC has consistently failed to offer the necessary support and services to those who need to break free from the clutches of addiction.
During my Listening Tour in Delportshoop and Longlands today, I spoke with families who are badly affected by the scourge of substance abuse.
One teenager, who left school because of financial pressures, is now dependent on crystal meth (tik). He wants to stop using it and return to school, so that he can study towards a career in the law. As he says, he knows that using drugs is bad for his body and he wants to stop, because “ek is mos lief vir myself” (“I do love myself”). But, addiction being what it is, he cannot break free from the drugs by himself. His parents cannot afford private care and the failing ANC simply turns a blind eye to his plight.
We have committed, as the DA, that we will reach out to a social worker to assist him. We will also support him, financially and morally, if he keeps his promise to become clean and return to school next year.
In another family, the parents are increasingly desperate and afraid of the violence their son displays. The only advice the police gives them is to hide weapons. When one is a grip of drug-fuelled rage, any innocent item can become a weapon.
It is also a common occurrence that household items are either broken in a fit of rage or stolen for money to get more drugs.
It is only change under a DA-led government which can bring the hope of upliftment and empowerment to our youth, so they need not throw their lives away.
