The Democratic Alliance in the Northern Cape expresses our deep sorrow and shock at the sudden passing of councillor Dirk van der Merwe. Councillor Van der Merwe represented the DA in ward 24 of the Sol Plaatje Local Municipality, a role he undertook with passion and integrity.
Councillor Van der Merwe was never too busy or too important for his community. Anybody could contact him with a complaint, day or night, and he would attend to it. He knew his ward like the palm of his hand and it was because of his commitment to his community that the DA won his ward time and again. You might call him a busybody, but his business was always the wellbeing of his people.
His passing leaves a great void. We will miss his passion for the party, his love for his community and his technical knowledge. His colleagues in the Sol Plaatje caucus will miss his voice and his active participation.
We offer our sincere sympathies to his family, especially to Mrs. Van der Merwe. We will keep you in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
