The Democratic Alliance has decided to end the coalition agreement in the Ubuntu Local Municipality due to the consistent non-cooperation of the two independent councillors.
We did not enter the coalition for the sake of power, but to be of service to the community who put their trust in us. The independent councillors have stubbornly and selfishly refused to honour the terms of our agreement. And we cannot be in a coalition with partners who prevent us from delivering on our mandate.
As a result, our DA councillors abstained from voting on the motion of no confidence in former mayor Paula Jantjies. The motion was tabled yesterday by the ANC during a special council meeting and passed.
While we congratulate ANC councillor Amelia Kweleta on her election as incoming mayor, she must know that we will hold her accountable for any non-delivery of services to residents. We will be working to ensure that every decision she takes is in the best interests of Ubuntu residents.
We remain committed to creating an environment for job creation, the delivery of basic services to all residents and ending corruption.
