ANC representatives in Sol Plaatje today again turned their backs on the residents of Kimberley, after staying away from the fourth failed council meeting at which the municipal budget was meant to be presented and discussed. This is unacceptable.Yesterday, business people gathered at the first scheduled public participation session on the budget, at the City Hall. Of course, the meeting could not take place because Council has not yet discussed the budget. This is a slap in the face of the people of Sol Plaatje, who are already facing extensive cost of living increases and are desperate to know what awaits them in terms of municipal increases on electricity, water, rates and taxes.Already, we have seen growing dissatisfaction of community members due to the ANC’s tardiness that has given rise to threats of future city shutdowns. One would think that the ANC government would urgently try and silence these frustrations by ensuring that council gets down to business.Instead, it is throwing fuel on the fire by blatantly bringing Sol Plaatje’s work to a standstill. The DA suspects this has to do with an ongoing factional battle within Sol Plaatje, that sees former ousted mayor Mangaliso Matika and current Mayor Patrick Mabilo, pitted against each other. We also suspect that the ANC is trying to keep matters, that will aggrieve the public, under wraps until after the elections. The DA will call on MEC of COGHSTA, Bentley Vass, to urgently intervene in Sol Plaatje. We will also call on ANC Provincial Chairperson, Zamani Saul, to call ANC councillors, as well as the Speaker and the Mayor, to order. They are getting paid to serve the people of this city. They are not getting paid to fight factional battles within the ANC.We, however, doubt that these calls will have any impact, as both Vass and Saul are part of the uncaring ANC, which is willfully disturbing the work of Sol Plaatje.Clearly the ANC cares more about power struggles and protecting mismanagement and corruption than it does about the people of Kimberley.A DA government will urgently intervene in Sol Plaatje and ensure that mechanisms are put in place to guarantee clean and efficient governance.Only change under a DA government will bring back hope to the expensive, dirty and pothole ravished city of Kimberley. |
