Note to Editors: Please find attached soundbites in English & Afrikaans from Reinette Liebenberg, MPL. The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Northern Cape will escalate the ongoing water challenges being experienced in Kareeberg municipality to the National Department of Water and Sanitation. This comes amidst ongoing concerns about the health and safety of residents in the Van Wyksvlei area and surrounds, as this community continues to struggle without running water. As a result of poor planning within Kareeberg municipality, this community has suffered for years without a drop of water flowing from their taps. The municipality’s mitigation measures, put in place to assist with the transportation of water back in January 2020, have provided very little and inconsistent water supply. The Covid-19 support from the Water and Sanitation Department, in the form of JoJo tanks and two trucks, is welcomed. However, the water trucks need to travel 80 kilometres, from Copperton, on very poor gravel road conditions causing damages and water loss. This has also led to learners being sent home from school as result of the lack of running water in the bathrooms. We cannot allow even a single community to live without fresh water, especially during these trying times, that see Covid-19 thriving in unhealthy living conditions. The DA will escalate this matter to the national department. We need to ascertain who is responsible for ensuring that the litres of water lost, are accounted for. We are also questioning why the JoJo tanks were never fitted with pressure pumps in the first place. It is unfair to expect communities to stay healthy when there is no provision made for running water. |
